Narrative of the Young Shepherd
Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His existence was pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to care for his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.
Tales of predators prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw no beast.
The boy giggled at the puzzle here on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
